OUR CHURCH

Our People

The modern idea that a church is a building or even a denomination was not the original meaning for the Greek Bible word, which we have translated as "church" in English. The church began as a local society of saints. Our local church is such a society, made up of individuals who have made a covenant with God by way of sacrifice, as per Psalm 50:5 and Hebrews 9:26, by accepting Jesus' finished work on the cross as atonement for our sin against God.  Each member has then accepted the Lord's ordinance of water baptism and will consistently partake of the Lord's Supper as a sign of our continued fellowship with Him. Our members meet weekly for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in right living from God's Word, as aided by those gifted by God (Ephesians 4) to edify them and equip them for good works, maturity, and unity in doctrine.

Our Pastor

Pastor Jonathan Oehlert has been in Christian ministry for over two decades. He finished Bible college and was licenced to preach in Indiana before he served as an interim youth pastor and worked as a Christian school teacher in Omaha, Nebraska. He married Angela Ream in 1999 and was ordained as a minister of the gospel by Midwestern Baptist Church the following year. In 2004, Jonathan and Angela began assisting Anchor Baptist Church in Burnaby, B.C. After serving there for four years, he felt moved to start a Bible-centered church near Town Centre Coquitlam. Pastor Oehlert is apt to teach. He enjoys understanding the whole context of Scripture in light of the history and culture. His great desire is to share the valuable truths of God's Word in a way that they can be practically applied to daily life within a real relationship with the Author. Pastor Jonathan enjoys the company of his wife and three young sons. He enjoys fly fishing, studying nature, and arborculturist pursuits.

Yes, a Christian should join a local church. Every candle should be on a candlestick

The Christianity passed to us by the Apostles (the 12 directly commissioned and trained by Jesus) is a thing to be shared by a local community of Christians. The Christian was commanded to not forsake assembling together (Hebrews 10:25). The Christians were told to work together as a body (Romans 12:4,5) in order to correct each other by Scripture, to encourage each other in the Lord, and to aide each other in doing good works (Ephesians 4:11-16; 2 Timothy 3:16). However, the onus is on each individual to have a personal relationship with the Lord through prayer, Bible reading, and biblical meditation on the things of God. Church meetings were a place for saints to be reminded or taught to be an everyday Christian at home and everywhere they might be. Jesus taught us to not hide our candle, but place it on a candlestick and shine for Him. In Revelation, we find that John saw the churches represented as candlesticks. The local church should aide each Christian in shining for Jesus as they ought to shine (Matthew 5:15; Mark 4:21).
